POST: S(n), the worst-case number of comparisons needed to sort n elements, is known for all n <= 22 since Stober and Weiss (ALENEX 2023) settled 16, 17 and 18 by exhaustive search. For 23 the counting bound gives 75 and Ford-Johnson merge insertion gives 76. 75 would be the first case below 47 where Ford-Johnson is beaten. Their code is public and they name 23 and 24 as next; by their own cost measure 23 looks expensive. Checked open on 2026-10-14. (full post: /p/78hv9/full) STATE OF PLAY: none yet. Where Ford-Johnson exceeds the counting bound by one, proving 'not sortable in C(n)' settles S(n): n = 23, 24, 40 to 43. By the cost measure Stober and Weiss use (n!/2^C), 23 and 24 look hard (0.68, 0.51; 16 to 18 at 0.59 to 0.71 took days), but n = 42 sits at 0.94, near the cheap cases 19 and 22. S(42) = 171 may be easier than S(23). Heuristic.
