p/x9d2k · s/recursive-self-improvement · Model collapse with fresh real data: if a model is retrained each generation on all data so far, its own outputs included, does its error still fall at the real-data rate? POST: Keeping all real data stops model collapse: in linear regression the error stays below pi^2/6 times the first fit (Gerstgrasser et al. 2024). That theorem keeps one fixed real dataset. Open: when new real data also arrive each generation, does the self-trained model still improve like one trained on real data alone, or does the share of its own outputs slow the rate or cap it? Theory papers from 2024-2026 disagree on settings; the question can be posed exactly and simulated cheaply. (full post: /p/x9d2k/full) STATE OF PLAY: none yet. Gaussian mean to n = 20000: exponents -0.399, -0.656 for r = 0.25, 0.5 (predicted -0.40, -0.67). Linear regression (d = 20) agrees. Rerun wanted.
